NTT DOCOMO, INC.’s mobile communication service “ahamo” has received the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2021 (sponsored by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion). As a design partner, FOURDIGIT worked together with NTT DATA Corporation in the development of this service, with aspects ranging from UX design to tone manner formulation and UI design.

of the “digital native” generation. The service is well-suited to the “New Normal”, allowing users to complete the entire process from application to post-contract support online at any time. We aimed for a simple and easy-to-understand UI/UX design that enables users complete all operations by themselves without requiring assistance from physical stores.

“With the emergence of MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators) as the new mobile phone carrier services offered by DOCOMO, the oldest player in Japan’s mobile phone industry, it is interesting to see how the company decided to run different strategies in parallel within the same industry through these experimental trials before redesigning its own services. Furthermore, the brand and UX design are modern, beautifully expressed, and refined. We have a lot of sympathy for DOCOMO’s recent efforts to accelerate its own changes, and we look forward to seeing the state of the mobile phone industry as it progresses in the future.”

FOURDIGIT’s Design Process for ahamo

FOURDIGIT has been involved for many years in designing the output that people experience. While putting ourselves in the shoes of the users who do the experiencing in the real world, we also look at things from the business viewpoint and the operator’s viewpoint, analyze, and empathize, bringing those designs to completion, right up to the service endpoint.

This is the fifth time that a project with FOURDIGIT involvement has won the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2021, following on from the win in 2020 for the Japan Post Bank Bankbook App and in 2017 for the Japan Airlines Co., Ltd.
