GakushuinSchool corporation and each school's Web site

Common design frame achieves the image of a combined educational institution fostered by tradition and history

Gakushuin is the combined educational institution and heir to history and traditions born in 1847 as the Kyoto Gakushuin, the Peers’ School. FOURDIGIT updated websites for 4 Gakushuin schools (the Primary School, Boys’ Junior High School, Boys’ Senior High School, and Girls’ Junior & Senior High School) and 3 related sites (the Gakushuin Corporation, Boys’ Junior & Senior High School Library, and Girls’ Junior & Senior High School Library). We developed a common design frame for all 7 sites to give them the sense of unity fitting of a combined educational institution. We also designed the websites to communicate Gakushuin’s unique character, dignified and refined, through its image, while also conveying the individuality of each school.

Comprehensive overhaul of design and technical specifications

Gakushuin’s long-standing history and traditions were born in 1847. This combined educational institution covers all curriculums, from kindergarten to post-graduate studies. Nearly 10 years had passed since the school websites were launched, so the technologies needed updating to provide support for smartphone accessibility, for example, and the functionality to respond to the fluid circumstances the schools face. FOURDIGIT overhauled the information design and technical specifications to enable control of posts on these official media sites, and developed a common design frame to engender Gakushuin’s essential character. We updated a total of 7 sites with the aim of unifying Gakushuin’s image as a combined educational institution.

Common design frame conveying Gakushuin’s essence

Dignity, Honesty, and Tradition were the design concepts. The guiding theme was to convey information honestly, not simply pursue novelty, so our aim was to ensure delivery of the information that needs to be delivered, while avoiding overly decorative features. We produced a common design frame to express Gakushuin’s essential character consistently across all the sites. We created that sense of consistency through common elements such as navigation and buttons, as well as the design systems, including typography and margins, while the sites’ key colors represent the distinctive characteristics of each school, on a base of Gakushuin blue. We formulated the details of each site with reference to the various educational principles and teachings of the various schools, for example, we used pop motifs with vibrant rounded corners and circles for the Primary School site, while we used photos of dignified landscapes for the Girls’ Junior & Senior High Schools site.

We enabled smartphone support with responsive web design, and reduced operating costs by overhauling the information design and consolidating the content. The sites can now continually deliver the latest information to students and parents/guardians amid the fluid circumstances the schools face.
